CHAPTER 13: POWER PLAY

Birk’s eyes glowed yellow, and the leaves sprouting from his head flashed with a surge of power through their veins as he turned his glower on Vidarr and Narra. “Prepare them.”

Citra held up one hand. “I motion for a break. A short time of preparation before the Trial of Integrity begins.”

Birk scowled at her. “We are already gathered.”

“Is this truly the will of Cheleth?” Citra asked.

Birk stood, and the roots embedded in his skin released him. “You doubt my connection, Citra? You have been offered this honor and could take my place.”

Citra’s skin glowed purple, and then receded to cream. “I will share the connection with you until the test is finished.”

Birk Glowfire’s power surged and expanded to light the room, but Citra stepped onto the steps and climbed them to the council’s seats.

The crowd murmured.

“What is going on?” Amaya whispered to Tanwen.

Tanwen ran a hand over her chin. “Birk offered Citra his seat, thinking she would refuse as she has every time before, and she’s just called his bluff. By taking the seat, she can connect with the planet of Cheleth and Birk, plus have a deciding vote in your favor. It shows her trust in you as the Rayatana.”

Amaya leaned toward Tanwen. “What does it mean to connect with Cheleth?”

“Cheleth is not just a planet but a sentient being, a tree and root system holding the planet together.”

Amaya turned slowly and took in the sight of the roots which held up the walls of the arena. The roots of Cheleth. And the roots came together in the wide chair where Birk had been seated. The chair quivered and expanded into a seat for Birk and Citra, who towered over him and needed more legroom. Birk’s power dimmed, and as he sat, the roots embedded themselves into his arms again. Citra sat beside him. The way the roots enveloped her and her tentacles entwined with them, it was as if she became part of the root system, except for her proud head and dark, wide eyes fixated on the arena floor.

Amaya didn’t understand half of what was going on, but she didn’t want to let Citra down. As she held Citra’s gaze, she wondered again what it meant to be the Rayatana when a powerful being like Citra expected so much of her.
